As a strong proponent of American energy independence, I applaud the Romney-Ryan plan to achieve that goal. The Romney plan will create jobs, reduce energy prices for families and businesses, and get our nation out of its dangerous dependence on foreign oil. This plan stands in stark contrast to President Obama, who has reduced energy production on federal lands, driven up energy prices for everyone, and has made it difficult to mine Kentucky coal. There is a stark choice in this election between a ticket that believes in American energy independence and has a plan to achieve it, and an administration with a clear record of broken promises.

Tax policies, regulatory burdens and tort costs are threats to manufacturing in the United States.

That was the consensus of some who testified during a congressional forum on manufacturing hosted Monday in Washington, D.C., by U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green.

“We saw 50,000 jobs created in manufacturing in January and over the last 13 months there were 255,000 added,” said Jay Timmons, CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, as the hearing was streamed live online. “But in order to get back what we lost, it will take 10 or more years of that type of growth.

Currently, Guthrie is reading “Eisenhower” by historian Geoffrey Perret.

After a recent visit to Gettysburg National Military Park and the farm that was Dwight Eisenhower’s summer White House, Guthrie realized he knew much about Eisenhower as a general, but not as a president, so he chose this in-depth biography to learn more. He is also in the midst of “Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II” by George Weigel.

“Most of my reading is on airplanes. I love the announcement to turn off cellphones,” said Guthrie, who often reads more than one book at a time, alternating between fiction and nonfiction.
